Plank-on-Frame Pond Boat Models
Sometimes less is more. We at Starleaf Boat Works are fascinated by large scale plank-on-frame boat models. There is a curious magic about them. What is it about these diminutive vessels that we find so enchanting? We’re not absolutely sure, but we know we love them.
Shown here, “Ota” is a cedar planked pond boat model that is meant to be put in the water and sailed. She looks equally good sitting on your mantle or slicing along with the briny deep under her keel. Ota has proven herself to be fast and able, living up to the ancient hull forms from which she is derived. She is built by myself, in the USA, using the same tried and true materials and methods as full-sized traditionally built boats. It is my own design, but it is heavily influenced by Scandinavian and New England work boats from another century. She is 32″ long and carries a small jib and a sprit mainsail sewn from a vintage Egyptian cotton sail. The detail is exquisite. Take note of the copper clench nails that fasten the plank laps and the sawn ribs fastened with wooden pegs. She is an heirloom quality toy to be handed down to future generations. If this design does not suit you, I will gladly pen a new design to your specifications.
